This is your Saturday night: a moment of awe, a glimpse of the impossible and the intoxication of your nightlife set free.

Several years ago I came to this city in search of days of beauty and nights of fire. Thus began Complacent Nation: seven years of massive art parties, intimate escapades, epic success and infamous failure. This Saturday is the culmination of our journey - a burning adventure of the everything-is-possible realized with music, performance and the spectacle of flame.

Because you love revelry spiked with risk, this is the night you dream of.

A tight cabal of artists, performers and miracle makers has come together to create simple moments of beauty within a massive carnival of fire. Expect: dozens of drummers + stilt walkers + fire spinners + renegade aerialists + fireworks & rocketships + gifts of liquor + brass march bands + champagne showers + a liberated water-front + the unending spectacle of sparks and flame and a night gone wild.

This event is epic, if you want it.

This party is free, open and participatory. If you have a costume wear it (the more immaculate the better), if you have a drink share it (discreetly), if you have music play it, and if you see something wrong set it right or keep moving.

The colors for this night are red, yellow and orange. Arrive in fire themed costume (think: Pheonix, Iccarus, Prometheus, M. Jackson circa 1984) or dress in red/yellow/orange. Bring gifts to share of red/yellow/orange (think: whip-cream on cherries, orange sorbet, vodka and lemonade, rubber duckies, match-sticks).

The start location will be announced on this list, Friday at 2pm.

Aim yourself for way-down-town Manhattan/Brooklyn, 7:57pm sharp.

Proceeds from this event will support Akim Funk Buddha under the The Rehabilitation Art Fund as he travels to Brazil to research in Rio de Janeiro this August, where he will also be performing in the International Capoeira Games. Donations can be made directly to Projectile Arts, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization that manages the fund. Akim Funk Buddha is the director of Projectile Art’s Urban Affairs Department.

A few weeks ago a small group of artists and event organizers came together to discuss building a follow-up event to last years First Warm Night street party. We decided to create something that would reignite the dreams of this city, a night of street liberation and subway revelry ending in epic spectacle.

And the theme? The theme will be fire. Because fire is our metaphor for liberation - fire is our catharsis - fire is that magic mix of beauty and danger that excites even the most cynical.

Join Akim Funk Buddha and Capoeira fusion mistress Myla Flores for an event supporting The Rehabilitation Art Fund, a project initiated by Projectile Arts to develop intercultural dance, film and theatre works.

“Taste of Brazil” (7:30 pm) features Brazilian foods, drinks, live music, song, dance, and a “Roda”, consisting of Brazilian instruments, graceful martial art, and uplifting Capoeira. “Igniting the Fire” (9:30 pm), is a performance-oriented party with aerial, urban and Balinese inspired mask dances, performed by a host of international musicians and movement artists ranging from Brazil, Japan, New York and more.

On the first warm night of last year artists, performers and over a thousand wild-eyed revelers took the streets of Red Hook Brooklyn. It was a night of fireworks, march bands, champagne, flatbed soundsystems and police-helicopters set against the epic ruins of a forgotten era. Saturday, July 29th, you are invited to participate in the next iteration: “One Night of Fire”.

In an era of darkness, we light our own flame.

Imagine: a street, a train and a massive fire finale. We’ve moved the date of this event in order to have greater participation from you artists and dreamers who have been so enthusiastic about making this night unforgettable. The gallery space of Holasek Weir Projects has been transformed into an immersive art landscape featuring a central shelter and the village of Land vs. the village of Sea. Upon entering you will be offered the scent of the earth, the taste of the sea and immaculate/delicate makeup art by Chiho Omae.

In the Village of Land: Debonair creates a cozy lounge of mint tea, earthen edibles, and future-telling. In the Village of Sea: The Miss Rockaway Armada offers watermelon shots, guitar songs and sailor blues along with oceanic video projections.

At the center of the gallery Thomas Beale presents a massive sculpture sheltering tribal performance by Akim Funk Buddha featuring a kinetic opera of aerial acts, body balancers and Brazilian drums by Seceda of the Urban Roots Project, Blumuse Dance, body-poet Kazuma Motomura, Roela LaMazing, Vivian on drums and Akiko the funky geisha. The late night is consumed with world-music beats and eclectic dance featuring dj’s $mall (c)hange, Darya Roquette, Gopal and Johny B. Plus earthen video projections by TheDanger.

This event is a benefit for Emergency, a collective of artists responding to environmental and political crises in society. Based in the heart of the Chelsea art market, Emergency’s mission is to reintroduce a social conscience and the concept of community in an artworld flush with wealth and egotism. Monies raised by this event will pay for the construction our 40,000sqft. studio work space.

Last Saturday, 1,400 of you came through our simple/ecstatic loft party in wilds of Brooklyn. Your energy and enthusiasm is astonishing - we cant live without the graciousness of your smile, the heat of your dance and your stamina to last past 10am on a gorgeous Sunday morning. This was a night of vanilla kisses, vodka-gun-shots, stilt walkers and epidemic dreamers. The sound was so tight it shook the paint from the ceiling (the ceiling is being scraped and repainted for the next event) the night so clear we could see for miles. This is the first of what we hope will be many events at the rawspace at 3rd Ward.

EMERGENCY

EMERGENCY is a group of multi-disciplinary artists and media creators who recognize and are responding to the manifold environmental, social and political crises facing society today. This will be our second public event. EMERGENCY’s members are developing a 40,000 square foot home base in Chelsea, New York, as a laboratory for our projects and ideas. The building will house a biodeisel conversion station, studios, and various projects aimed at instigating dialogue about the challenges we face on a global scale in these times. The build-out of the space will rely heavily upon re-used materials and sustainable technologies, in keeping with the ethos of the project. This event will help to fund that build-out.

Friday, 7/7, we bring to you a fully-fused art and performance landscape of large-scale sculpture, dance, aerial feats, dj’s and deep music from traditions across the globe. Featuring an operatic drum, dance and aerialist spectacle by Akim Funk Buddha and his tribe of body-balancers and aerial performance artists. Bodies and movement will be interwoven with a massive new structural sculpture by Thomas Beale. Also, explore dual village lounges, hidden performances and video projections by TheDanger.

The 2006 Mermaid Parade

The Mermaid Parade is a completely original creation that is that nation’s largest art parade and one of New York City’s greatest summer events.

The Mermaid Parade celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island, Coney Island pride, and artistic self-expression. The Parade is characterized by participants dressed in hand-made costumes as Mermaids, Neptunes, various sea creatures, the occasional wandering lighthouse, Coney Island post card or amusement ride, as well as antique cars, marching bands, drill teams, and the odd yacht pulled on flatbed.

The recent earthquake in Yogja, Indonesia has caused catastrophic damage. Our dear friend and a founder of 23 Windows, Taylor [Zemi17] has been studying gamelan in Yogja, which is the cultural center of Indonesia. All proceeds of this event will go directly to earthquake survivors + communities of the region.

This party is one night of refuge for you, the dreamer, who desires a city as wild as it used to be. In the New Lost City our myth is this moment…

This event will take place at the three conjoined lofts at 14th St. and 6th Avenue - a massive space of large rooms and cozy nooks made more expansive by new areas of art and intoxicants that haven’t been seen before. Due to the raising of rents, this will probably be the last event hosted at this space. Enjoy it while you can.

In the room of Roses:
Inflatable sculpture by TheEye presides over soul-shaking sets starting at 9pm with Akim Funk Buddha and Magbana combining West African drumming with Brooklyn hip-hop and body balancing in a four-course music explosion followed by the infamous Hungry March Band fulfilling your fantasy of liquor fueled march band mischief.

After midnight your dj fix is met with new sounds from dj Ayo of Multikulti spinning world beat; the breakbeat genius Wavewhore of Broke Recordings/Electrofly Records/BreaksFM, and deep breaks from Devo vs. Bianca of 3L3tronic.com, with a sunrise trance set from The Eye of Disorient.

In the room of Roots:
Special elixirs and eclectic mixes meet for a spring ritual featuring dj’s $mall Change and Shakey bringing their famous music collections with spontaneous collaborations by Moldover and deep house grooves by the Amazing Jordan. Sebastian Patane Masuelli of the American Watercolor Movement provides the visual backdrop with audio-kinetic video projections on dual screens.

In the New Lost City everything comes easy…

For everyone who has been to an event at this space, you have seen nothing yet. Several new rooms have been cleared out for more intimate acts and indelicate surprise, including the Wanderlust chocolate lounge with hookas and edibles from Miko and Lauren; the secret sedition lounge where Debonair serves green tea infused vodka’s and lychee saketini along with massage and aroma therapy in the living art piece Perspectives by Selena. Discover our other hidden spaces featuring body painting by Digerati, Zen Tarot by Arwen, photography by Kris Graves and acts of spring/fling by Action/Direction.

On the wide-open rooftop the Huckleberry Project offers liquor mixed with ice-cream combining our favorite intoxicants to produce the most fun you can have with a spoon. Choose from a half dozen flavors (imagine chocolate gelato mixed with Bailey’s Irish Cream). Along with sculptured wood-work by Thomas Beale and live accordion + vocals from Shawn Neutrino and Theodore Love.

Expect: big brass bands and bawdy burlesque; touchable art and edible delicacies; small moments of hilarity; thick moments of passion; liquor and ice cream; tickled libido; the wings of angels; forgotten epiphany; hula-hoops of fire; the caress of your beauty in a city of dreamers.

The lofts at 14th St. and 6th Ave. have been cleared out, leaving a half dozen new hidden rooms and secret spaces for the anything goes. These intimate nooks are about the size of an empty bedroom and in them we want your interactive visions of this sanguine spring. We are looking for masseuses, body painters, hooka lighters, fortune tellers, peep-show makers, soufflé bakers, and other creative visions we can’t even imagine.

We are calling you to inhabit these small spaces for a night - to make them as immaculate as we are making the rest of this event. For this we will reward you with liquor, fame, and a fist full of cash to reimburse your expenses and then some. First, thank you to everyone who came out to the Wild Wild Brooklyn closing party last Friday, the hundreds of you who celebrated through sunrise reminded us of why we need to fight for places to gather in this city. After a week of negotiations with the local authorities we were able to host the event with no interruptions and look forward to producing bigger happenings in that neighborhood in the future.

We are continuing to look for a new home base large enough to accommodate our vision - judging by your endless energy that vision may be infinitely expandable. Mark your calendars for Saturday May 27th for a night of springtime fervor mixing our most beautiful and dark intentions in the final New Lost City party to be hosted in Manhattan.

This weekend is host to the Bicycle Film festival, four days of bike films and street activities. We like bikes, we like films and we really like the organizers of this festival because of the respect they pay to the political side of biking, especially here in New York City.

There are things you should not do. You should not drink, nor dance, nor play music at volumes higher than what the NYPD dictates. When the stress of the city burns inside, when the hypocrisy of this era overwhelms you, do not step outside, don’t ride in mass, and never celebrate the simple moments we share. This is the state of our city at the Exclamation Point.

As Bush shuffles his deck of Jokers, out with the old and in with the old, nothing changes. The war in Iraq rages on yet Rumsfeld says “we’re turning a corner” and nothing changes. A great American city is washed away by neglected levees, we cry on our tv sets and rage at the ineptitude but nothing changes. And as we search for Saturday nights of salvation we find nothing but contempt as super clubs and underground parties alike are shut down for the same petty violations. This is our city, we exclaim. We still have rights, we exclaim. Nothing changes. This is the state of our nation at the Exclamation Point.

But the warmth of the season is licking our imagination and the streets of this city look ripe for the taking. Some things do change and this is what we fight for: taking streets, riding Critical Mass, creating protest, and celebrating the art and wonder of the underground party scene. Things change as long as we exclaim our dreams in voice and action. This is life on the brink…

The NYPD Wins the Battle for Brooklyn

The Battle for Brooklyn started at 8pm with live music performance and outside Bar-B-Que. The weather was amazing, one of those intoxicating days when everyone simply wants to be out and alive. The performance became hotter as the night grew dark, with Beans and Vic Thrill throwing down stunning sets, Beat Boxer Entertainment shaking people with disbelief and Small Change riding the crowd with dancey beats in the back room. There were dirty carney games, the sultry hooka lounge and stunningly decked out tribes battling for the Key to Brooklyn.

But as we learned the hard way, the most powerful gang in Brooklyn is the NYPD and when they come to battle, they do *not* fuckaround.

This was our 6th event at this space, and the first one where we opened the doors full-force, without limiting the crowd by RSVP or other means. The hundreds and hundreds of you streaming through the streets raised the ire of the local police precinct, who raided the event at 1:30am, shutting it down by 2am with the help of the FDNY on account of “overcrowding”.

The boys in blue were officially awarded the Key to Brooklyn, but the rest is not history.

We are meeting with the local precinct to see if we can save the location and continue to do events there (unlikely). In the meantime we will be searching for a new location that can handle the thousands of you who want to drink in the nightlife unpasteurized.

You are the rockstars and the night is your stage.
This performance is far from over.
